Labor/Employee Management - Do's and Don’ts of Employing Staff

Description: Learn what your obligations are under the law, and how you can protect yourself and your business.  Also learn how to hire staff, maximize employee work and minimize lost productivity, while providing competitive pay and benefits for your staff.

Speaker Bio: Keith Duplessie has been working with innovative companies in the Auto Detailing industry for the last 16 years.  He has been the Technical Services Manager at Detail Plus, creating and installing detail equipment and products, and working with detailers worldwide, and later worked with Big Man washes, a leading car wash and detail distributor and builder in Dallas, Texas as a Territory Sales Manager and Detail Program Manager, and is currently with P&S Sales as its Customer Development Specialist.  He has also recently purchased Detail Plus and acts as President of the company.  He has been a leader in our industry for many years, educating detailers around the world.  He has been a guest speaker at many of the leading trade and industry events over that time, including the ICA, WCA, SWCA, and Mobile Tech trade shows, specialty training events with leading manufacturers, and numerous Webinars.  A leading proponent of industry certification, as President of the IDA, Keith led the IDA’s effort in creating the Certified Detailer Program and has trained and certified over 140 detailers with the IDA as one of the first Recognized Trainers.  He is currently in his final year on the IDA Board of Directors, having served as President, Vice President (Operators), Treasurer and now Board Liaison to the Certification Committee.  Keith is an IDA Member and part of the Founders Club of the IDA.

Keith is a Master Sergeant in the Texas Army National Guard, serving as the Senior Health Care NCO for the 176 Engineer Brigade.  He has served in various roles since his enlistment in the Army 28 years ago, and recently returned from a 10-month deployment to the CENTCOM Area of Operations, where he was based in Kuwait with the 176 EN BDE.

Speaker Bios: Prentice St. Clair has been a consultant and trainer to the detailing industry since 1999 and has been providing retail detailing service since 1994.

Brian Brown has owned and operated Exclusive Detail since 1995.  He has been providing professional detailing services to customers since then.

Description: Most small businesses fail within the first 5 years.  This is because most small business owners are prone to making a few common mistakes.  In this presentation the speaker will go over some real-life experiences in which he learned the hard way and what can be done to avoid making those same mistakes.

Polishing Technology Primer: Old and New Technology Reviewed & New Trends

Description: This class will share the history of car detailing tools.  This will include tools used in the early days of detailing to the tools currently being offered in the industry and a glimpse of the tools that will be available in the near future.

Speaker Bio: Mike along with Adrienne “AJ” Janic are the hosts of Competition Ready on the Velocity TV Channel, a show dedicated to sharing car detailing tips and techniques.  Mike is the Director of Training for and teaches their 3-day Competition Ready Detailing Classes, their 2-day Roadshow Classes and their Marine Detailing Classes.  Mike has appeared as the guest detailing expert on Chasing Classic Cars with Wayne Carini; My Classic Car with Dennis Gage; Two Guys Garage with Kevin Byrd, Willie B., and Bryan Fuller; Truck U with Bruno Massel and Matt Steele; and Motorhead Garage with Dave Bowman and Sam Memmolo.

Previously Mike worked for 11 years at Meguiar’s Inc. as their Primary Instructor and the “Answer Man” for their car detailing discussion forum.  Mike Phillips has over 30 years of experience in the field of auto detailing and reconditioning and a true passion for automobiles. He currently serves on the IDA Board of Directors.

Making Money with Marine Detailing

Description: Marine detailing is an often-overlooked area in the detailing industry.  This presentation will help shed light on how boat detailing can be a great source of revenue by focusing on efficiency and upselling.

Parker has been detailing for 14 years, specializing in boats for the last nine years.  He has detailed more than 750 boats, and is a leader in Mold & Mildew mitigation in Boats & Marine applications.  Parker is IICRC certified in WRT (water restoration technician) & Fire & Smoke Damage.

Coating Revisited: What are the Latest Trends?

Speaker Bios: Thomas is responsible for Research and Development of Detail and Retail product lines, All International sales and support for Simoniz USA Inc., The Simoniz Detail Division (team/vision/implementation), All Detail Training and trainers, and The Simoniz Garage.

Renny and his wife Diane are 37-year entrepreneurs, business coaches, trainers and mentors, having assisted at launching or coaching over 400 business startups or business expansions.  Renny is also a trainer with the state guard (Army) and a trainer within the wilderness search & rescue community. 

Eric is a detailer of 20 years.  He is active in the industry writing for Auto Detailing News and speaking at tradeshows.  Eric's focus is on profitability and efficiency, helping many distributors, shops and operators get to the next level.

Identifying and Creating Additional Revenue Opportunities for Your Business

Description: This class will go over how to identify and create additional revenue channels for your business.  We'll talk through how to find and evaluate incremental sales opportunities that fit your business model.

Speaker Bio: Seth Glauberman is the vice president of sales and marketing for Malco Products, Inc., a manufacturer of high performing compounds, polishes, waxes and interior/exterior cleaners.  Malco was founded in 1953 by Murray Glauberman.  Seth started his career in the industry by detailing cars in college.  He began working at Malco 14 years ago, starting on the manufacturing side before joining the sales team.  Seth became the vice president of sales and marketing in 2010.  He holds a mechanical engineering degree from The University of Colorado and an Executive MBA from Case Western Reserve University.

Creating a Training Manual - An Employer’s Map to Successful Employees

Description: The goal of this presentation is to create a better understanding of what should be included in a training manual for employees.  This will include content, layout, pictures, and procedures.

Speaker Bio: Rob Schruefer owns On The Spot Mobile Detailing out of Columbia, Maryland.  In 2004, On The Spot was established with little money and experience.  Since that time, On The Spot has established itself as a leader in the mobile detailing segment of the detailing industry, employing over 30 people and eight mobile detailing units.

Phase I consists of 10 exams, 10-20 questions each, in these subject areas: Equipment, Chemicals, Windows, Trim & Metal, Floors & Carpets, Seats, Paint Correction & Protection, Wheels & Tires, Prep Wash/Wash Bay, Detailing Terminology, Safety & Compliance.  A passing grade is 80% and qualifies you to take the next exam.

Skills Validated Testing

The Skills Validated tests represent the four primary categories that each candidate must demonstrate their “hands on” ability to perform.  The detailer must perform each phase of the testing on their own, and meet the minimum proficiency expected in order to pass.  The exam is presented in a scenario-type format to afford the detailer the opportunity to demonstrate the abilities expected of the Advanced Detailing Professional.  The applicant must have already completed Phase I Certification, having passed the 10 written exams, to fulfill the classification of Certified Detailer.  Phase II Skills Validation testing demonstrates hands on skills and in-person testing by a IDA RT (Recognized Trainer) in areas covered in the written exams: Wash Bay/Prep, Interior, Exterior Correction, and Finishing Steps.
